The first man-grown Korean pine forest in China
A long history can be traced back to the manual cultivation of Korean pine in Caohekou of Benxi Manchu Autonomous County. At the very beginning of the thirties, Japanese larch was introduced and Changbai larch and Korean pine were grown by manual cultivation. In spring of 1931, pine seedlings were planted in the wild valley of Caohekou Xigou with area of 2.2 hectares. After revolutionary war of Benxi, more pine seedlings were grown with the area of 7 hectares in spring of 1949. Thus, the first large man-grown Korean pipe forest has been built up in China. In September 1984, Liaoning Forestry Department carried out evaluation on agamo-seed garden cultivation technique for Korean pine among management and research institutes of forest under its jurisdiction. In September 1985, seed garden cultivation technique for Japanese larch and resistance crossbreeding technique developed by the institute were appraised to reach the advanced national level. Korean pine forest at Caohekou deserves to be the wonders of Liaoning forestry with the largest area, growing well and high quality woods. It is also the important base for scientific research on forestry in Liaoning Province that attracts experts both home and abroad for investigations.
