Current Position: Home >> Benxi Overview>>Natural and Geographic Situation Natural and Geographic Situation Benxi is located in the southeast part of Liaoning Province (stretching from 123°34' to 125°46' east longitude and from 40°49' to 41°35' north latitude) and in the central region of Liaodong peninsular, with Shenyang and Fushun on the north (77 and 79 kilometers away from Shenyang and Fushun separately), Dandong on the south (198 kilometers away from Dandong), being adjacent to Liaoyang and Anshan on the west (46 kilometers away from Liaoyang) and being backed up by Jilin on the east (150 kilometers away from Tonghua). Benxi covers an area of 8411.3 square kilometers shaped like dumbbell. The natural topographic feature is described as “eighty percent of mountain, ten percent of water, five percent of farmland and five percent of road and manor.” Benxi is the center city of Liaoning Central City Group and a famous heavy industry base. It is also a bigger city defined by the State Council with many rewards such as Superior Tourism City of China, Advanced City for National Unity, Advanced City for Administration according to Law and Model City for Two Supports to the Army. Benxi is situated in the wet mesothermal climate zone with mild wind and sunny day in spring, a little bit hot and rainy days in summer and clear sky and cool day in autumn. The average temperature of the year varies from 6.1°C to 7.8°C while the average temperature of the hottest month, July, can be up to 24.3°C and the average temperature of the coldest month, January, can be lower to -14.3°C. The rainfall of the year is from 800 to 900 millimeters with half amount of rainfall coming in July and August in summer which contributes to sufficient water supply. The mild wind and sunny day in spring, a little bit hot and rainy days in summer, clear sky and cool day in autumn and freezing and snowy days in winter go through all the way in a year. So, the optimum season for traveling around is autumn. Benxi is composed of 4 districts including Pingshan District, Mingshan District, Xihu District and Nanfen District, 2 counties including Benxi County and Huanren County and 1 economic and technology development zone. There are 25 street offices (one for each county), 40 villages and towns, 229 communities and 289 village committees. 26 nationalities like Han, Man, Hui, Chaoxian and Meng are distributed throughout the city with total population of 1.567 million and 65.7% of non-agriculture population.
