Benxi Water Cave
Benxi Water Cave, formed as a huge limestone cave brimming with
water some 4 to 5 millions of years ago when the earth’s crust shifted,
is lying by the bank of Taizi River in Benxi County and 35 kilometers
east of Benxi urban area. The cave’s entrance with 7 meters high
and 25 meters wide, in a shape of half moon, is located by the riverside
of Taizi River which faces the north and is embraced by mountains
and rivers all around. On the sheer rocks at the top of the entrance,
BO Yibo’s handwriting Benxi Water Cave is engraved there. Upon entering,
a
hall with 20 meters high and wide called Yingketing (means a hall
for greeting guests) extends as far as over 50 meters. The ruins
of our ancestors who lived there more than 3000 years ago can be
found. On the right of the hall, there is a dry cave with 300 meters
long and uneven ground and twisty road. Several landscapes inside
like Gujing (ancient well), Longtan (dragon pool) and Baibuchi (one
hundred-step-pool) make you lost in fanciful thoughts and enchanted
deeply without going back home. The pier leading to the water cave
lies in front of the hall and holds more than 40 boats to berth
within the water surface of over 1000 square meters sketching the
contour of a peaceful and unique port. In light, the reflection
of boats and stones on water puts you in a paradise. Going down
the stone steps and across the walkway, you can get on the boat
at the pier and enjoy the sightseeing tour of Benxi Water Cave.
The deep and broad water cave winds its way about 2800 meters long
with area of 36000 square meters and space of over 400000 cubic
meters. The widest position takes the size of 38 meters high, 50
meters wide and 80 meters long. The maximum daily flow in the cave
can be up to 20000 tons and the highest depth happens to be 7 meters
deep. The runway, known as galaxy with nine twists, is full of turns
and twists and clear enough to see the bottom. Stalagmites stand
along the two sides of the galaxy with thousands of postures and
wonderful views. There are stalactites hanging down from the top
vault presented by overflowing vigor and sparkling color. More than
60 scenic spots with different characteristics are a feast for your
eyes. The newly developed underground river scenery with 500 meters
long, known as Source of Tianchi and Yunu Palace etc, takes on an
exceptional charming and mysterious look. It feels like spring all
the year round in the cave as air can be accessible to the cave
all the way through and temperature remains permanently at 10°C
in four seasons. The one, enjoys sightseeing by boat in the cave,
would feel like wandering in the paradise. The cave has been awarded
the reputations for A Treasure in the North of China, Wonders of
the World, First Class in Asia and A Rear Scenery in the World.
The ancient winding corridor twining around the mountainside, the
man-made lake and pavilions, towers and terrace halls on the water
in the distinctive style outside the cave forms a sound and harmonious
landscape associated with the sceneries inside. Overlooked from
the entrance to the cave, the large inscriptions on precipices,
Guanyin Statue, is situated at the opposite mountain and seems like
dropping down from the sky. In addition, taking the risk of drifting
in Taizi River and diverting yourself in fishing along the pool
make you feel happy and relaxed. The tourists from all over the
world are welcomed to visit Benxi Water Cave at any time in a year.
It will be our pleasures to let you get some idea of how splendid
are the sacred sights of Yandong and the unique vigor of northern
sceneries.
Mount Guanmen
Mount Guanmen scenic spot, 48 kilometers away from Benxi urban area
and 13 kilometers south of Benxi Water Cave, is located in Benxi
Manchu Autonomous County. The mountain was named after its two peaks
shaped like a gate standing opposite to each other with one broad
while the other narrow and one big while the other small. Three
gates have been formed, i.e. north gate, south gate and middle gate.
The road from Benxi County leads to north
gate where two mountain tops stand facing each other and are connected
by arch bridge between them. The road to Tang Valley goes through
south gate which lies at the top of the mountain with strategic
access. Middle gate is placed on the river in the barranca. Water
flows through two door panels at some 20 meters wide serving as
natural gate post for reservoir. The mountain has been spoken highly
as “Small Jiangnan” (south of the Yangtze River) and “Scenery Surpassing
Yellow Mountain”. In addition, Mount Guanmen is well known to the
public as Small Yellow Mountain in the northeast characterized by
five beautiful sceneries. First, mountain’s beauty lies in steep,
pretty, high and precipitous appearances. The mountain rises abruptly
out of the ground with graceful and attractive pictures of pine
trees swinging in the wind and widespread queer stones. The beauty
looks like several clusters of large miniature gardening made by
natural creation. Second, tree’s beauty is symbolized by a lush
growth and various kinds of trees. Particularly, the green pines
rooted on the cliffs in the winter enjoy widespread renown as well
as the maple leaves in the autumn on a magnificent look. Third,
water’s beauty comes from the Tang River flowing all the way through
the valley to outside of the gate by collecting streamlets and waterfalls.
It looks like the galaxy running from the horizon. Forth, flower’s
beauty attracts your eyes with Magnolia Sieboldii, Benxi City Flower,
and ghent azalea all over the hills and valleys. Meanwhile, those
flowers give out fragrances striking the nostrils. Finally, cloud’s
beauty comes to view when the mountain is lost in the cloud and
mist like fine gauze in the morning after rain. Much closer you
go, more beautiful and confusing scenery can be found than ever.
Cloud, mountain, water and mist all blend into one harmonious whole.
At the far end, cloud is colorful and flourishing and mountain peak
is so charming by disappearing and reappearing alternately. Many
scholars in the past dynasties sang the praises of the beautiful
sceneries of the mountain. Every year one comes after the other
for going out sketching, drawing and shooting that forms a new landscape
of Mount Guanmen.
Mount Wunu
Mount Wunm, also called as Mount Wulong or Mount Wuyu, is located
on the west bank of north Hun River in Huanren County and 8 kilometers
away from Huanren County Government. It is said that five women
stationed troops on the mountain and built up city and fortresses
so as to keep invader from getting into. Later, the mountain was
named after the five women as Mount Wunu. Up to now, the remains
of Wunu Temple can be found. The lofty and dangerous main peak with
altitude of 824 meters (cable way available now) seems like a delicate
green screen if you look far into the distance. As a matter of fact,
Green Screen consists of cliffs and precipices extending 1500 meters
long from east to west, 300 meters wide from north to south and
about 200 meters high. There is one pass on the south that can lead
to the mountain peak after moving through roads with 32 turns and
the steep pass at Tianmen Peak. On the top of the mountain, the
flat ground and fertile soil furnish the flourishing growth of woods
and grass. The ancient temple and heaven pool with clear and non-dried
up water can be seen there. Looking into the distance from the top
on the east, Dianjiangtai (the stand for assigning tasks in ancient
times), Hun River reservoir is a vast expanse of misty and rolling
water. Cloud, sky, mountain and water all blend into one harmonious
whole. Huanren County attracts to your eyes like a beautiful scroll
painting. It is easy to command the whole view of the chains of
mountains around as you stand at the peak. Stepping on Jixiantai
in order to view the reservoir by casting a sidelong glance, Hun
River looks as clear as mirror from this point. Mount Wunu integrates
not only many peculiar beauties of water, stones, pines, caves and
peaks but pretty sceneries in four seasons together. Especially
at the time of bitter winter, woods will be covered with icicles
when steam is frozen on the branches. It looks like that the sky
and the water meets together in the white world. There are more
than 40 scenic spots on Mount Wunu that one can’t take them all
in at one time. Mount Wunu was regarded as a jeweled palace in elfland’s
hills among ancient places of interest. In 37 B.C. (the second year
of Jianzhao’s reign named for Yuan emperor of Han Dynasty), ZHU
Meng escaped from north Fuyu to the mountain and built city walls
according to the historical record. Then, the mountain city became
the first city after the state of Koguryo (Gaogouli) was founded.
In 1424 (the twenty- second year of Yongle’s reign of Ming Dynasty),
LI Manzhu, Jianzhou leader of Nuchen, once lived in the mountain
city. Liaoning Political Coordination Newspaper published a piece
of news (the fourth page on July 17, 1992) that LI Shizhen had been
to Mount Wunu when he gathered medicinal herbs. Mount Wunu is now
on the list of Liaoning historic reservation famous for its long
history. The ancient wall on the mountain built up with rocks extends
about 1000 meters long with base of 5 to 6 meters wide while top
of 3 to 4 meters wide and 8 meters high. The crenel at the city
entrance can be found. Up to now, the ancient city on the north
of Mount Wunu has been keeping intact.
Benxi Lake
Benxi Lake, located under the western cliffs of Mount Woyun in Xihu
District of Benxi, originally was called as Beixi Lake or Baixi
Lake. During the period of Yongzheng’s reign of Qing Dynasty, the
title was changed to Benxi Lake. Then, Benxi City was named after
Benxi Lake. The shape of Benxi Lake contours like rhinoceros horn
with wide outside while narrow inside. The lake lies in a cave covering
about 20 square meters water area and accounting for the smallest
lake in the world. The daily flow of the cool water can be up to
20000 tons. The calligraphy Liaodong Benxi Lake has been engraved
on the cliffs at the top of the cave. The ancient temple outside
the cave with statues and painted murals inside was established
in Ming Dynasty known as Cihang Temple at that time. The gurgling
clear water runs its way from the cave to the man-made lake built
after liberation. The lake with area of more than 2000 square meters
is surrounded by dancing willows and decorated by arch bridge and
pavilion in the middle. Tourists can enjoy sailing on the lake in
various boats ready to serve. Glistening light of waves, small boat,
reflection on the water, ancient cave and green willow all make
tourists full of great interests and provide an ideal place to keep
away from hot weather in summer. In 1984, stone steps leading to
the top of the mountain were built as well as sightseeing pavilion
and exhibition hall for cultural relic which seasoned Benxi Lake
with elegant appearance. The exhibition hall for cultural relics
displays about historical relics found at ruins of the ancients
on Mount Miaohou all year round. There is a stalactite cave, known
as Dragon Cave or Peculiar Stone Cave, at the mountainside 1000
meters south of the lake when looking upward. The cave winds it
way forward to hundreds meters. The stalagmites with different postures
and expressions spread here and there in the cave. Some look like
Buddha expounding Buddhism and some look like 18 arhats getting
together. So, it is called Arhat Cave. It is said that celestial
LI with long eyebrow once lived on the stone bed in the cave for
a long time. The tale story enriches the cave with immortal circumstances.
Another Long Snake Cave outside the entrance is too deep to be fathomable.
The two caves and Benxi Lake respond to each other afar and form
a concert contrast. |
